The Swachhata app

The Swachhata app  is a mobile and web platform by the Indian Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) for Swachh Bharat Mission that allows citizens to report cleanliness and civic issues like garbage dumps or blocked public toiletsCitizens can upload a photo of the issue, which is then geo-tagged, assigned to a city official for resolution, and provides status updates and notifications to the reporter. The app includes features to re-open a complaint if the citizen is not satisfied with the resolution and can be used in English and several regional languages.

How it works:
  1. 1. Report an issue:
Citizens take a photo of a cleanliness-related problem, such as a garbage dump or uncleaned dustbin.

  2. 2. Provide details:
They select a complaint category and can add a brief description and landmark.

  3. 3. Complaint assignment:
The app automatically uses the photo’s geo-location to identify the issue’s precise location. The complaint is then routed to the relevant sanitary inspector or engineer in that city’s Urban Local Body (ULB).

  4. 4. Resolution and notification:
The official resolves the issue and uploads a photo as proof of work. The citizen receives a push notification and can view the status updates.

  5. 5. Feedback:
Citizens can give feedback and even re-open the complaint if they are not satisfied with the resolution.

Key features:
  • Citizen participation:Fosters civic engagement to improve sanitation.
  • Geo-location:Pinpoints the exact location of the problem for faster resolution.
  • Status updates:Provides push notifications on the complaint’s progress.
  • Re-opening complaints:Allows citizens to take action if their issue isn’t resolved.
  • Multi-language support:Available in English and several other regional languages.
  • Data integration:Performance data is used in the annual Swachh Survekshan (cleanliness survey) to motivate cities.
